True TV Scanning Rate in ESEM (1983)

The images below are photographs of still frames from a video recording of water flow and absorption by tissue paper in ESEM. The video was made at true TV scanning rates, i.e. at 25 frames per second and no frame averaging or other image processing was used. The excellent BSE signal-to-noise ratio should be appreciated considering that the live recording was obtained at room temperature with full saturation water vapor pressure using a low of 7 keV electron beam. The water droplet flow was controlled by a specially designed micro-injector device (27). One can readily observe the formation of the water droplet at the tip of the needle and the subsequent fast and "continuous" absorption of the water by the tissue fine structure. The system allowed enough space to introduce the micro-injector and specimen at low kV and room temperature without the need of a cooling device and without compromising contrast and resolution. These original results remain unique and have not been reproduced outside this lab yet (as of the year 2007).  Commercial ESEMs have not yet implemented this capability. Some later video excerpts from the ElectroScan ESEM of 1989 show live specimens and other in situ experiments.
